In late 2005 three girls from Edinburgh set themselves
the challenge of raising £10,000 to help
build an orphanage in Nakuru, Kenya.
In February 2006 they hosted a Gala Evening, including fashion
show, dinner and auction at the
award winning Cargo and managed to raise an outstanding £15,000
In
March 2006 the girls visited the Australian family who left their
homeland to devote their lives to the orphans of Kenya. Whilst
there they got involved will all aspects of the orphanage, witnessed
the development of the building project and learnt about the
work that MIA was doing with the community; constructing water
tanks, educating the community on health issues, building a local
store and looking after the older members of the community.
The orphanage
is due to open in December 2006 and once open will need funds
to
Provide
electricity
Purchase farming equipment
Build a playground for the children
Purchase adjoining land to establish social and educational
centers
Build a medical unit that will cater to the needs
of aids babies and children
Establish workshops, seminars
and conferences based on the needs of the community
Start
sister orphanages in other communities
Promote employment
opportunities
The girls plan to visit the orphanage again
in June 2007 but before then they have set themselves
the fundraising target of £25,000 which they aim to
raise through another gala evening at Cargo.
